Work and Travel in London During the 2012 Olympics

With the British Trade and Cultural Office set to launch the “Youth Mobility Scheme” (YMS) in Taiwan on January 1, 2012, why not head to London, dive straight into Olympic-related jobs, watch the games, and enjoy a holiday—all in one go?

The globally watched sporting events—the Olympics and Paralympics—will kick off in London, UK, in July and late August 2012 respectively. The organizers have been making extensive preparations, both in terms of infrastructure and services, to accommodate athletes, delegations, spectators, and tourists from around the world... As a result, a huge workforce is needed to fill roles including ticketing, venue preparation, cleaning staff, opening and closing ceremonies, catering and kitchen operations, merchandise sales and delivery, engineering and technical support... It is expected that over 100,000 paid job opportunities will be available. The “Youth Mobility Scheme” is open to Taiwanese aged 18 to 30, allowing them to live, work, or study in the UK (excluding professional athletes, coaches, intern doctors, company founders, or those investing over £5,000 in equipment). The visa is valid for up to two years, during which multiple entries to the UK are permitted. The British Trade and Cultural Office will issue up to 1,000 such visas per year to eligible Taiwanese. Those interested must first apply to the National Youth Commission for a “Certificate of Sponsorship,” which is required for the visa application. The first phase of applications through the National Youth Commission will close at 5:00 PM on December 20. If any slots remain after the first phase, the second phase will be open from 10:00 AM on May 1, 2012, to 5:00 PM on May 20, 2012.
