Indulge in a Centuries-Old Afternoon Tea Experience – Mandarin Oriental Bangkok Authors’ Lounge

Situated on the banks of the Chao Phraya River, Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok is famed for its high level of service, while the “Authors’ Wing,” built over 130 years ago, is the most iconic part of the hotel. The name of the Authors’ Wing originates from the many renowned writers who have stayed here, such as British literary giant Somerset Maugham and romance author Barbara Cartland. The Authors’ Lounge on the first floor of the Authors’ Wing is where you can enjoy afternoon tea. In this spacious, all-white setting, there are comfortable rattan chairs and tables, complemented by palm trees and bamboo that bring touches of greenery, creating a romantic and elegant atmosphere.

The afternoon tea here is available in both English and Thai styles. The English afternoon tea includes a three-tiered assortment of pastries along with a pot of tea, priced at around NT$1,400. The portions are quite generous, suitable for 2–3 people to share. First, you’re served a lemon sorbet that is slightly tangy yet sweet, refreshingly delicious. Next comes the three-tiered pastry stand, loaded with a rich variety of treats, including crème brûlée, chocolate cake, and fruit cheesecake, while the bottom tier features finger sandwiches and savory tarts. The highlight of this tea experience is the scone — its deliciousness comes from using premium imported ingredients from the UK, coupled with handmade craftsmanship. The scones are soft and fluffy, and when spread with butter and fresh jam, they offer a delightful layered flavor. The tea at Authors’ Lounge is selected from the famous French brand Mariage Frères, with a wide range of flavors, and you can get a free refill of tea when you order the afternoon tea set.

After enjoying a leisurely afternoon tea, step outside to see the lush and refined garden. Walking along the garden path leads you to the end, where you’ll find the Mandarin Oriental Bangkok boat pier, with the Chao Phraya River coming into view. All kinds of water taxis bustle across the river, busily ferrying tourists between the two banks, forming a unique riverside vibe.
