Kinmen is a well-known hometown of overseas Chinese, with numerous grand Western-style buildings scattered across the island. To admire Kinmen’s diverse architecture—from traditional Minnan two-courtyard houses to stunning Western villas—you must visit Shuitou Village, often described as Kinmen’s most fascinating architectural museum. Hence the local saying, “You may have the wealth of Shuitou, but not the houses of Shuitou,” referring to the unparalleled quality of the homes there. Shuitou is a multi-surname village developed together by the Huang, Li, Cai, and Chen clans.

The various clans in Shuitou were all enthusiastic about public welfare. Those who went abroad and earned money mostly sent their earnings back home to build ancestral halls, Western-style houses, and schools. Just as Shuitou is rich and beautiful, so too are the hardships and nostalgia borne by its overseas Chinese.

The Kinshui School in the Shuitou settlement was completed in 1932, funded by overseas Chinese from Nanyang who donated their remittances. Meanwhile, the 11-meter-high De Yue Lou tower served a defensive role for the entire Shuitou Village.

Additionally, the Chen Jinglan Western-style House is considered the most beautiful in Kinmen. It was the residence of Singaporean businessman Chen Jinglan and stands as a representative of the Western-style houses built by returning Kinmenese overseas Chinese. The house took four years to build, and the Chen family moved in during 1921. The first floor was used as an elementary school to educate local children.
