The National Taiwan Museum's Digital Time Machine takes you back to the old stories of Taiwan in those years

The National Taiwan Museum is exhibiting “Digital Time Machine – Stories of Those Years” from now until April 15. The exhibition features themes including the early “Taipei Sky,” various “Cultural Ethnic Groups” across the country, and the nostalgic “Life and Entertainment.” Starting from a sense of nostalgia, it showcases the preserved collections that represent various lifestyles and historical customs of Taiwan in the past, allowing everyone to find their own unique stories from those years.

The exhibits include performance posters, personal photos, and theatrical video clips of puppetry master Li Tien-lu; classic songs left behind by Taiwan’s 1960s icon, the King of Songs Hong Yifeng, such as “Old Love Lingers On,” “Sunset over Tamsui,” “The One I Long For,” “Ballad of Taiwan’s Four Seasons,” and “Taiwan Mambo”; as well as treasured photos and manuscripts of contemporary literary master Yu Guangzhong, painting the outline of the development of contemporary Taiwanese literature and art.

The digital results of the “Hong Yifeng Virtual Music Museum” exhibited in this special exhibition include 30 themes, with nearly three years spent on oral history collection. Viewers will discover that these are all stories from everyday life in Taiwan, and the songs sung represent the history of Taiwan. As Hong Yifeng famously said: “As long as someone is listening, we must sing with dedication.”

This special exhibition is jointly organized by the National Taiwan Museum and the National Digital Archives Program for Digitization and e-Learning. On the Digital Archives and e-Learning Resources website digitalarchives.tw, there are tens of thousands of precious images, including many old photos from before 1960, as well as postcards, documents, and book illustrations from the same era. The public can also browse this rich collection of historical materials that carry the history of Taiwan online, reminisce about the local customs of the past, or further utilize them for research and teaching.
