The first female train driver in Taiwan Railways Administration's 125-year history has emerged

For the first time in 125 years, Taiwan Railways' first female driver will officially take up her post in August this year. Currently, these two female trainees have both completed 4.5 months of theoretical training at the TRA Employees Training Center's train driver class and have now begun hands-on driving learning and training. Upon passing the relevant driver qualification review and assessment, they are expected to officially become qualified train drivers in August and December of this year, respectively.

Since 2008 (Year 97 in the Republic of China calendar), Taiwan Railways has successively recruited female technical staff. The first female train driver of Taiwan Railways graduated from a national university graduate school and is a female trainee. Chen Shuying, who graduated from the Electrical Engineering Graduate Institute of a national university, also joined the ranks of female train driver training in 2010 (Year 99). To accommodate female employees taking on driver roles, Taiwan Railways specially designed women’s uniforms, made of blended wool fabric, in navy blue with gold single-breasted three-button styling.

Additionally, in consideration of workplace safety for women, in addition to being issued with personal alarms and whistles, female train drivers are assigned independent and dedicated standby dormitories equipped with surveillance cameras to prevent any harassment incidents.
