The roundabout on Nanjing West Road was once a shared memory for Taipei residents. After two major fires, its management changed hands several times, but results remained below expectations. Today (the 9th), Taipei Roundabout has reopened under the leadership of media mogul Yu Hsiang, who took over the Chengjian Roundabout and invested millions to rebuild it. Centered around the roundabout’s original concepts of “park” and “gastronomy,” it now offers gourmet banquets by Chef Zhong and houses organic lifestyle businesses, paving the way for a new future.

The redesigned roundabout was created by Lan Mike, who has won multiple design awards at the Taipei Flower Expo. He incorporated green living concepts, including addressing the issue of light transmission through the glass curtain wall by transforming it into a natural greenhouse. Along the outer wall, 500 trees have been planted, resembling a forest moat that shields visitors from the hustle and bustle of traffic, allowing coffee-drinking and dining customers to leisurely enjoy the green scenery through the glass. Inside the first-floor lobby, the remnant of a World War II-era air-raid water storage tank has been revitalized with flowing fountains and planted with over ten types of native Taiwanese plants. He stated that starting this Saturday, an organic produce market will be held here, where the public can purchase organic fruits and vegetables while admiring thoughtfully designed floral arrangements.

The reopened roundabout also emphasizes gourmet offerings. Chef Zhong, dedicated to preserving Taiwanese cuisine, has set up shop in the roundabout, serving high-value banquet-grade dishes. A twelve-course meal originally valued at over NT$10,000 is now available for just NT$6,000, featuring items such as Spanish paella with grilled king crab, Taiwanese clams in “Thousand-Hand Guanyin” style, and shrimp marinated in Shaoxing wine. In addition to banquets, new tenants in the roundabout include Bean’s Flavor, Frog Coffee, Midoorie Ice Cream, and Prince Star Time Tea Room, all promoting natural, eco-friendly, and interactive experiences, together crafting a new image for the roundabout.
