The “2012 Northeast Coast Canoe Carnival” will launch on June 9 at the Longmen Canoe Base in New Taipei City. Although dragon boating has become a traditional activity during the Dragon Boat Festival, dragon boats are bulky and not as user-friendly as canoes, which can easily be paddled by just two people. Therefore, those who want to enjoy the fun of canoeing during the festival can opt to participate in the canoe carnival races. This year, the organizers have planned the event around a carnival theme. Not only will there be canoe races on the waters of the Shuangxi River, but there will also be land-based activities organized by the Taiwan Outward Bound Trust. Even better, participants who register will receive a “smartphone waterproof pouch” and be entered into a draw to win a “single-person canoe.”

The races are divided into three categories, offering different distances and levels of difficulty so that outdoor enthusiasts can choose the one that suits them. The “Happy Parent-Child Group” covers a total distance of 1 kilometer, making it perfect for dads, moms, and kids to come together and enjoy the festive canoeing atmosphere. The “Energetic Open Group” spans 2 kilometers, ideal for young friends to gather and have fun racing. The “Passionate Relay Group” requires participants to complete a 3-kilometer course in relay format, allowing teams to experience seamless cooperation and camaraderie.

The main racecourse is the calm waters of the Shuangxi River. During the competition, participants can not only enjoy the thrill of racing but also take in the breathtaking views of the vast Northeast Coast where the sea meets the sky. The Shuangxi River flows into the ocean at Fulong, creating a unique sand spit landscape formed by the interaction of river and sea, offering both inland river and open ocean vistas. The inland section of the river features calm waters, making it an ideal area for water-based activities. Registration for the race is now open.
