Tainan Moon Lake Harbor Lantern Festival: Hidden Eco-Art "Adventure in the Ice Age"

The Tainan City Environmental Protection Bureau promotes resource recycling and reuse. In conjunction with the municipal government’s “2017 Moon Lake Harbor Lantern Festival” to welcome the Year of the Rooster, it has created paper-mache artworks such as “Adventure in the Ice Age,” “Egg Chicken Paradise,” “Butterflies Greeting the New Spring,” and “Finding Alice” using recycled waste materials. These pieces are cleverly hidden in corners of the lantern festival exhibition area, offering delightful surprises to visitors. Everyone is welcome to come and explore them.

The Environmental Protection Bureau said the “2017 Moon Lake Harbor Lantern Festival” runs from January 21 to February 28. The bureau’s aesthetics class used recycled Styrofoam, paper, furniture wood panels, and rice straw, aligning with the Year of the Rooster theme, to create works such as “Adventure in the Ice Age.”

Among them, the Egg Chicken Paradise features a cheerful large rooster and a group of bright yellow cute chicks, symbolizing good fortune and collective joy. There are also Antarctic penguins and polar bears that draw attention to global warming, highlighting the survival crisis that climate change brings to polar regions. This serves as a reminder for the public to conserve energy, reduce carbon emissions, cherish resources, and help save the homes of Antarctic penguins and polar bears.

The Environmental Protection Bureau urges visitors that these adorable paper-mache artworks are all handmade by members of the bureau’s aesthetics class and are for viewing, photography, and social media check-ins only. Please do not touch or play with them to avoid damaging the works, which would undermine the environmental message and educational value of this hidden eco-art corner at the lantern festival.
