Lukang Celebrates the Dragon Boat Festival: Throw 3 Sacred Jiaos at Wenchu and Wumiao Temples to Win Gold Ingot

The Dragon Boat Festival is just around the corner. This year, besides eating zongzi and watching dragon boat races, Lukang Wenchu and Wumiao Temples will hold events where participants can throw sacred jiaos to win gold ingots and gold leaf zongzi from June 16–17 and June 23–24, between 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM. During the event period, those who throw 3 sacred jiaos at the Wenchu Temple will receive one gold leaf zongzi, while those who do the same at the Wumiao Temple will get one gold ingot. Participation is free and open to all on-site.

Lukang Wenchu and Wumiao Temples consist of the Wenchu Shrine, Wumiao Temple, and Wenkai Academy. The Wenchu Shrine enshrines the God of Literature, Wenchang Dijun, while the Wumiao Temple is dedicated to Guan Yu, the God of War. These have long been important sites for locals to pray for academic success, career prosperity, and to ward off misfortune. In conjunction with the Lukang Dragon Boat Festival, the temples are launching the “Throw Sacred Jiaos to Win Gold Ingots and Gold Leaf Zongzi” event. The gold ingots are believed to bring wealth and prosperity, while the gold leaf zongzi are said to bless examinees with success in exams and academic advancement.

The Lukang Dragon Boat Festival series runs from now until June 24 and is an annual highlight for the town. In addition to the sacred jiao throwing event, the Wenchu and Wumiao Temples will host a variety of other activities during the festival period, including “Poetry, Music and Art at Dragon Boat Festival,” “2012 Flip, Toss, Roll, Kick and Challenge Five Obstacles to Celebrate the Festival,” “Casting Lots to Become the Top Scholar,” “Official Promotion Game,” and “Sailboat Cart Experience.” Among these, the “Official Promotion Game” is an ancient Chinese children’s game where players spin a four-sided top engraved with characters such as talent, virtue, merit, and goodness. Depending on the symbol the top lands on, players move their pieces on the board and receive rewards or penalties. The gameplay is similar to the well-known Monopoly.
