Surfing, sand sculptures, and the Harvest Festival Crab Season in Kinmen kick off on July 7

The Kinmen coastline, once laden with landmines from wartime, has become a vibrant summer attraction as tensions have eased. This year’s Kinhu Beach Crab Season will take place from July 7, with activities held at Houhu Coastal Recreation Area and Kinhu Chenggong Beach. The program includes kite surfing experiences, Kinmen sightseeing markets, family sand sculpture competitions, harvest festivals of indigenous peoples from both sides of the Taiwan Strait and beyond, as well as a battle of the bands competition among musicians from the three regions. Participants are required to reinterpret a Teresa Teng song, with the winning act taking home a prize of NT$100,000.

The 2012 Summer Kinmen Maritime Festival — Kinhu Beach Crab Season combines military culture with the unique local crab ecology. From July 7 to August 7, activities include a barbed wire maze, landmine windmill art installations, a mosquito liberation film screening, large-scale sand sculpture displays, kite surfing experiences (by reservation), seine net fishing experiences (by reservation), and a water park for children. There will also be photography and sketching contests for the Crab Season, with submissions accepted from July 1 to July 31.

During the early period of cross-strait confrontation, Teresa Teng’s gentle voice resonated across the strait, giving rise to phrases like “Listen to Old Deng by day, and Little Deng by night.” In honor of this, this year’s “Battle of the Bands among Three Regions” requires participants to reinterpret a Teresa Teng song as their competition piece. The winning band will receive a prize of NT$100,000.
