Old Buildings, New Definition: Huashan Thousand-Layer Open-Air Stage Debuts

Located at the hub of the “Huashan 1914 Creative Park,” the Thousand-Layer Open-Air Stage has officially opened to the public after nine months of construction. The newly renovated stage connects the Huashan Theater in front with the various venues behind, integrating east-west circulation routes like a bridge that ties together the surrounding buildings. It has also invited renowned lighting artist Lai Yu-nong, known as the “Poet of Light,” back to Taiwan to unveil his installation artwork “The Light Dam” for the first time. This piece was previously exhibited at the “I Light Marina Bay 2012” light art festival in Singapore. Free admission is available starting today.

Held in Singapore, the “I Light Marina Bay 2012” is currently Asia’s first and only light art festival focused on sustainability. Lai Yu-nong was the only Taiwanese light artist invited this year. During the “Light Up Good Mood – The Light Dam Light Art Exhibition,” he showcased his Singapore light art festival piece for the first time at Huashan’s Thousand-Layer Open-Air Stage. The installation consists of dozens of square balloons with devices inside that absorb light energy and convert it into electricity, achieving the goal of recycling “light.” The exhibition runs until July 22, with the lights turned on every evening at 6:30 PM, and is open to the public free of charge.

In 1914, the first building in the Huashan Park, the Sake Brewery, was constructed. In 2012, Huashan reopened the Thousand-Layer Open-Air Stage, not only integrating the existing historical buildings within the park but also revitalizing and repurposing idle spaces. Amid the shaded plaza of the white cypress trees, a natural performance stage has been created. Future plans include hosting art and cultural sales events through diverse creative shops to attract more visitors.
