In April of the 44th year of the Republic of China (1955), the "Free China" set sail from Keelung Harbor bound for the United States. Along the way, it encountered a typhoon and was damaged, but after repairs by the crew, it finally arrived at its destination in early August. Although it missed the international sailing competition it had originally intended to participate in, the indomitable spirit of the crew was warmly welcomed by the local American public, even leading to the erection of a monument in their honor. The voyage of the Free China took place during a time of heightened tension across the Taiwan Strait, yet its daring journey across the ocean exemplified the courageous maritime spirit of the people of Taiwan. In the 48th year of the Republic of China (1959), the National Museum of History acquired a model of the Free China through relevant channels, and also houses a handwritten navigation diary from the Free China, which serves as an important historical record documenting the original appearance of the ship and its over 100-day voyage across the Pacific Ocean.

The Admiral No. 1 is an ancient shipwreck excavated by the National Museum of History in 1996 (the 85th year of the Republic of China) during an underwater archaeological survey in the waters near Admiral Islet in Penghu.
