Sun, sand, and mud baths — Korea’s Mud Festival: The darker, the more beautiful

Surfing at the beach to beat the summer heat isn’t enough? How about trying beauty-enhancing mud treatments and sunbathing by the sea? Every summer, the “Boryeong Mud Festival,” a Korean summer event that attracts global tourists, will be held on July 14th in the area around Daecheon Beach in Boryeong. During the festival, various mud experience activities will be available on-site, including a free self-service mud massage zone, mud pool slides, body mud painting, and “Experience Korean Rhythms with the Mud People,” where you can try traditional instruments. In the evenings, there will also be a range of performances such as mud B-Boy shows, summer night concerts, and the Green Groove Festival featuring Korean hip-hop artists.

The Boryeong Mud Festival will take place from July 14th to 24th at Daecheon Beach, the largest beach on Korea’s west coast. The free self-service mud massage zone and shaded umbrella area offer a natural experience with Boryeong mud and sunlight. The mud pool slide, perfect for families, provides thrills and splashes of fun. In large mud pools that can accommodate many people, you can enjoy entertaining mud baths along with a variety of fun games.

During the festival, the mascot of the Mud Beauty Festival — the Mud Doll — will perform throughout the event grounds and beach area, alongside celebratory parades and powerboat performance competitions. At the “Experience Korean Rhythms with the Mud People” activity, you can learn to play traditional Korean instruments like the janggu drum and gong for free. Evenings will feature mud B-Boy shows, 7080 Concerts, saxophone music performances, and the Green Groove Festival bringing together Korean hip-hop artists.

The Boryeong Mud Festival was first launched in 1998 to promote Boryeong mud and local tourism, and has since gained praise from both domestic and international visitors, now entering its 15th edition. From Seoul’s Central City Bus Terminal, it takes just about 2 hours and 30 minutes to reach Daecheon Beach by direct bus. Official event website: www.mudfestival.or.kr.
