Artworks as the Canvas, People Within the Paintings — The Astonishing Bruegel Transferred to the Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts

During the summer vacation, aside from hiking and traveling, many people also choose to spend a relaxing time in museums and galleries. The Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts will hold the “2012 Art. Cross-Disciplinary” event on July 21–22. On the afternoon of the 21st at 14:00, in the museum’s underground lecture hall, there will be a screening of the art film *The Astonishing Bruegel*, which premiered at the Louvre in Paris last year. The film uses visual effects such as “artwork as the canvas” and “people within the paintings” to present classic works. Then, on the afternoon of the 22nd at 14:00, there will be a performance by the “Come&Go String Orchestra” in the first-floor sculpture hall. All activities in this series are free of charge, offering the public a cool and culturally rich weekend.

The new film *The Astonishing Bruegel*, created by Polish director Lech Majewski, makes viewers feel as if they have entered a moving painting. It brings the classic scenes from Northern Renaissance master Bruegel’s renowned work *The Procession to Calvary* to life. *The Astonishing Bruegel* premiered at the Louvre in Paris last year. The imagery in the film flows and transforms slowly, like a painting. Using traditional bluescreen technology and combining human figures seamlessly with the painted backgrounds, the film achieves astonishing visual effects described as “artwork as the canvas” and “people within the paintings.” Additionally, the “2012 Art. Cross-Disciplinary” series will also screen a selection of films portraying artistic masters using Hollywood-style filmmaking techniques on September 15 and November 17.

The concert *Carving. Caliber* performed by the “Come&Go String Orchestra,” which has been active for ten years, will feature a selection of classic pieces from both Eastern and Western music, including “Vivaldi: Violin Concerto RV.199,” “Fengyang Flower Drum,” and “If I Open the Door to My Heart.” There will also be a prize quiz and mysterious little gifts.
