The Pingxi Creative Sky Lantern Contest Offers a Top Prize of NT$30,000 – Registration Now Open

As one of the traditional folk culture events, the “Pingxi Sky Lantern Festival” has become a well-known event across Taiwan, attracting hundreds of thousands of people to the mountain town of Pingxi every year to take part in the magical night when lanterns rise into the sky. The creative-shaped sky lantern design competition held last year received widespread acclaim. This year’s competition is now open for entries from today until October 5, with 20 finalists expected to be selected to participate in the final release event on October 28. The first prize winner will receive a cash award of NT$30,000.

This year, the New Taipei City Government Tourism and Travel Bureau continues to host the Creative Sky Lantern Competition, which will be judged in two stages. The preliminary round will be evaluated through a written review process, with 20 works expected to be selected to enter the final release event on October 28 at the Shiding Sky Lantern Square. The top three winners will receive prizes of NT$30,000, NT$20,000, and NT$10,000 respectively, and an additional three merit awards will each receive NT$6,000.

The symbolic meaning of sky lanterns as prayers for peace has long been deeply rooted in people’s hearts and is beloved by many in Taiwan. Last year, the New Taipei City Government Tourism Bureau specially organized a creative-shaped sky lantern competition, where the “Heart-Shaped Sky Lantern” and “Pumpkin Sky Lantern” stood out. These unique lantern designs were also released during special holidays, adding more fun and variety to the tradition.
