Flights by Cathay Pacific will continue to be delayed on Sunday due to the impact of a strong typhoon in Hong Kong.

Cathay Pacific announced that due to the impact of the strong typhoon Vicente hitting Hong Kong, which led to the cancellation of 56 flights and the diversion of 16 others, the resulting ripple effects and issues such as passenger volume mean that it will still take time for the airline’s flight services and schedules to return to normal. It is expected that flight operations will only stabilize in a few days’ time. Passengers who were originally scheduled to depart today (25th) through the 29th are advised to consider cancelling or postponing their trips. Cathay Pacific will waive change fees, fare difference charges, cancellation fees, and refund handling fees. These measures apply to all Cathay Pacific tickets issued on or before July 24th for travel departing today through the 29th (regardless of ticket class).

Cathay Pacific’s Chief Executive Officer John Slosar said: “Although the strong typhoon has moved away, the severe weather continues, bringing frequent heavy rain, strong winds, and thunderstorms to Hong Kong and surrounding areas. To ensure the safe take-off and landing of flights, additional time has been allocated for scheduling departures and arrivals. In addition, due to lightning affecting Hong Kong Airport, staff working on the tarmac must temporarily evacuate their positions to ensure safety when lightning occurs. Therefore, services over the next few days will continue to be affected even after the strong typhoon has passed.”
Cathay Pacific expects that multiple flights will still need to be delayed before the end of this weekend, and some flights may need to be cancelled in order to reposition aircraft and crew to their appropriate locations. In addition, luggage delivery services may also be delayed. As flight operations remain affected, passengers are advised to check the latest flight information on the Cathay Pacific website www.cathaypacific.com.tw before heading to the airport.
