American-style restaurants in Taipei that focus on hamburgers have been popping up one after another for at least ten years, as far as I can remember. Some have come and gone (like Phat this year), while others have lasted a long time (though not necessarily tasting great). Burger & Co has been around for about three years, relatively lesser-known, with a simpler menu that still drew me in. I finally decided to check it out.

I had just arrived when they opened and wanted to go in, but the tables weren’t cleared yet, so I was asked to wait outside briefly. Burger & Co is a small, cramped place. Once the open kitchen starts frying patties or food, the smell of oil becomes quite strong. Actually, if the weather isn’t too hot, you might as well sit at the two-person outdoor seating area—it’s more ventilated and brighter.

I ordered the signature burger (NT$180) and Buffalo chicken wings (NT$170), and got a cold drink (NT$50) from the self-serve station. The beef is supposedly imported and ground in-house, and the fries are made by cutting whole potatoes, though I didn’t get any fries this time.

The “signature burger” doesn’t look particularly fancy—just a patty, cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion, and a bit of sauce—but you can clearly tell it’s made with care. The bun is slightly crisp and chewy on the grilled top side, and the inner side that touches the filling is extra crispy. If you peel off a bit of the bread to eat, it has a mildly sweet flavor. The lettuce and onions are well-drained, crisp, and not soggy at all, so the overall bite isn’t mushy or soft.

I forgot to ask if the pure beef patty could be cooked to a specific doneness—it was cooked to about 90%, with finely ground meat that wasn’t coarse, a solid beef flavor, and a bit of juiciness inside. It was delicious. The patty had a good amount of salt, which contrasted with the slightly sweet bun, making me want to drink something to balance it out.

The Buffalo chicken wings are fried first and then coated with seasoning. They’re tangy with a mild spice level—two or three pieces were enough for me, and ordering such a small portion for one person still felt like a bit much.

For an NT$180 burger, its performance is quite satisfactory.
