Lace Underwear Transformed into Ceramic Bowls: A Pottery Artwork Showcasing the Beauty of Orchid Island

Recently, Orchid Island was hit by a typhoon, leaving many of the scenic landscapes cherished by tourists in need of extensive restoration and recovery to regain their former beauty. However, ceramic artist Huang Guowei spent a full month on Orchid Island in February this year, drawing inspiration from an in-depth experience of the island’s culture and daily life to create a series of artworks. Through his ceramic pieces, he introduces Orchid Island to the public. His exhibition “Seeing Purity. Blue – Orchid Island Residency Creation Exhibition” has been on display at the Yingge Ceramics Museum from now until October 14, featuring works such as ceramic bowls inspired by lace underwear.creativityThe exhibition also includes photos of Orchid Island’s hidden gems, recreating the island’s unique and secluded beauty.

This exhibition is being held at the small stage of the Life is Beautiful Cultural Goods Concept Store in the Yingge Ceramics Museum. The “Child-Adding Bowl,” designed with the imagery of lace underwear, features a front side decorated with blue underglaze patterns resembling woven belt textures, while the back playfully molded into the shape of a buttock, sure to bring a smile. The “Outrigger Canoe” retains traditional decorative elements in a smaller, endearing size, with delicate and refined painted details, available in three sizes and shapes to suit various needs. The “Silver Helmet Warrior” turns the traditional clothing and silver helmet of the Tao people into figurines — the helmet serves as a cup, while the body forms a cup stand. There are also items such as earphone dust plugs designed with Orchid Island’s “Three Treasures” — owls, goats, and flying fish — keychains shaped like dried flying fish, and postcards featuring Orchid Island’s scenic views. Together with photos of Orchid Island’s hidden spots, these pieces showcase the beauty of the island witnessed during the residency period.

Huang Guowei has visited Orchid Island for six consecutive years. Last year, he also participated in the centennial Orchid Island boat-launching ceremony, personally experiencing traditions such as wearing lace underwear and launching the boat. This year, due to a long-unused electric kiln at a local homestay, Huang was invited for a one-month residency. During this time, he combined the beautiful scenery he saw with local culture for in-depth research and artistic creation. By utilizing local resources — from soil collection, production, firing, to manpower — all were completed by locals on Orchid Island, resulting in artworks that are 100% “Made in Orchid Island.”
