Asia's first avant-garde art exhibition: A-MIT brings artists to the world stage

The Avant/Garde Diaris, a global art exhibition, will make its Asian debut in Taipei after stops in international cities like Berlin, Copenhagen, Los Angeles, and London. The Taipei event is named “The Avant/Garde Diaris Taipei – A VOICE Avant-Garde Art Exhibition.” For the first time, the organizing team Mercedes-Benz has invited avant-garde artist representative A-MIT (A-Mei’s alter ego) as the curator. Inspired by the concept of “sound,” A-MIT has collaborated with eight emerging Taiwanese artists to present an intergenerational sound art experience. The exhibition will be held at Huashan 1914 Creative Park and is free to the public from November 9 to 11.

Chen Chen-chuan, the artistic director of the exhibition, explained that the avant-garde art show will feature digital and interactive installation artworks. The theme “A VOICE” runs through the entire exhibition. Given A-MIT’s background as a musician, audiences will not only engage with sound through hearing but also through other senses—such as sight, touch, and even skin—to feel the emotion conveyed by sound. The main visual identity specially features an unreleased look of A-MIT. Considering that A-MIT represents an avant-garde spirit that transcends identity, the visual does not reveal A-MIT’s full appearance, which makes it all the more intriguing.

In July 2011, The Avant/Garde Diaris exhibition, curated by fashion designer Raf Simons, kicked off in Berlin, Germany. It brought together artists such as Peter Saville, contemporary industrial design master Konstantin Grcic, and DJ Hell. Using the Mercedes-Benz A-Class as a symbol, the event launched a wave of avant-garde art through design and music creation. Since then, in major global cities, The Avant/Garde Diaris exhibitions have been organized by local curators, gathering artists and trend-setting figures. Centered around the curators’ inspirations, they have co-created experimental works aiming to sketch blueprints for the contemporary and future world, engaging in dialogue with experts and the public. In April this year, in Los Angeles, USA, a 17-day exhibition curated by Mike D, lead singer of the hip-hop group Beastie Boys, attracted over 30,000 visitors with contributions from art and music creators such as Santigold, Tom Sachs, James Murphy, Ben Jones, and Diplo.
