Essay Collection: Touching Stories from the East Coast Campaign Kicks Off

While the scenic beauty and local cuisine along the way are undeniably alluring, the deeply moving stories of the people you encounter are even more memorable. For example, in Donghe Township, Taitung County, there’s a “prodigal son” from Chiba Prefecture, Japan, who became a Bunun tribesman through surfing, a dropout who transformed into the principal of a hunter school in Shueilian Village, Hualien County, and someone who gave up a six-figure monthly salary to buy a discarded elephant slide for NT$100, bringing the Green Island elephant gang together to fulfill children’s dreams. To celebrate its 25th anniversary in 2013, the Eastern Coastal National Scenic Area Administration under the Tourism Bureau of the Ministry of Transportation and Communications has launched an essay collection campaign from now until January 15, 2013. By uploading your touching little stories encountered along the East Coast to the campaign’s official website, you could win prizes such as in-depth eco-tour packages and homestay experience vouchers. Winning entries will also be featured in the 25th-anniversary commemorative publication by the Eastern Coastal Administration.

This “The Sea Is Better With You” essay campaign accepts online submissions in Chinese, with no restrictions on length or style—short poems, essays, and more are all welcome. As long as it’s a heartwarming story accompanied by one to three photos or hand-drawn illustrations, simply upload it to the “The Sea Is Better With You – Small Stories, Big Touches Along the East Coast” campaign webpage to complete your submission. This campaign features both judging by the organizing committee and online public voting. The top three, honorable mentions, and merit awards will be selected. Online voting runs from February 1, 2013, to February 28, 2013. Whether you participate by submitting or voting, you’ll have a chance to win homestay experience vouchers, theme park tickets, and handmade crafts from the East Coast.
