Tourism Bureau's Nationwide Group Meal Competition: Hualien's 5 Restaurants Take the Crown

The Ministry of Transportation and Communications' Tourism Bureau has announced the winners of the "2012 Taiwan Group Meal Showdown." Hualien County took the top spot with five selected restaurants: Shi Ting Hakka Bistro, Sakura Field Restaurant, Shin Kong Chaofeng Farm Harvest Restaurant, Chef Ming’s Restaurant, and Yongfeng Live Seafood Restaurant. Tainan City came in second with four selected restaurants: Yamato Japanese Restaurant, Fucheng Dining Restaurant, A-Xia Hotel, and Taiwan Sugar Evergreen Hotel. Taipei City, Taoyuan County, and Taichung City each had three restaurants selected, tying for third place.

The "2012 Taiwan Group Meal Showdown" involved fierce competition among the shortlisted restaurants and guidance from various county and city governments. A panel of 30 judges—comprising food critics, restaurant chefs, tour guides, travel industry professionals, academics, and government representatives—visited restaurants across Taiwan incognito to conduct taste tests. They evaluated the meals based on five criteria: "Local Identity and Culture," "Taste and Creativity," "Environmentally Friendly Practices," "Speed and Quality," and "Health and Wellness." During their on-site evaluations, the judges discovered many impressive Taiwanese specialty dishes, ranging from unique local ingredients and seasonal produce to vegetarian and healthy cuisine. Each establishment went all out to showcase the refined essence of Taiwanese culinary culture.

 

The selected restaurants in Taipei City are Seafood King Restaurant, Qizhen Club, and Lotus Pond Vegetarian Restaurant. In Taoyuan County, the selected spots are Daxi Shanshui Garden Restaurant, Hengwei Dining Hall, and Dalu’an Indigenous Cultural Theme Restaurant. In Taichung City, the selected restaurants are Golden Capital Gourmet Club, Daughter Red Wedding Banquet Hall, and New World North District. The Tourism Bureau will provide the list of selected featured restaurants to travel agencies for use in crafting tour packages for international and mainland Chinese tourists, as well as domestic group travel. It also recommends these restaurants for corporate year-end parties, family gatherings, and banquets, helping to promote Taiwan’s group meal cuisine.
