Showcasing local floral art, Pingtung’s Yanpu Flower Float Parade kicks off today

To welcome Christmas and the arrival of the new year, the Pingtung Yanpu flower industry group today (22nd) at 3 PM designed floats using locally grown flowers and paraded them through several communities in Yanpu Township, including Xinyuan, showcasing the region’s floral charm. This flower float parade was jointly organized by the Kaohsiung-Pingtung Flower Marketing Cooperative and the Xinyi Community Development Association. There were a total of six floats: the lead vehicle was decorated from a truck, while the other five were modified from cargo trucks. Locally grown flowers such as wild ginger lily, Oncidium, bird of paradise, Dendrobium, anthurium, star of Bethlehem, cockscomb, and yellow coconut were used for decoration. Each float was named respectively “Flowers of Yanpu,” “Love of Wild Ginger Lily,” “Dancing Fairy,” “Christmas Fire Couple,” “The Beauty of Erhu,” and “Through 2013.”

The flower float parade started at 3 PM on the 22nd from the cooperative, passing through Julu Road, Pengcuo Road, Shirong Road, Zili Road, Ziqiang Road, De’er Street, Dexie Road, Jianye Road, Weixin Road, Xingao Road, and Ziqiang Road (square), with an evening gala to follow. The parade included performances by a cheer samba drum team and cheerleaders, with more exciting shows in the evening. Wu Suzhen, a floral design teacher involved in the float design and setup, said that in the past, she mostly worked on bouquets, floral arrangements, and event decorations. This time was really interesting—using flowers all grown by Yanpu farmers gave a unique feeling. Community flower growers and local women all pitched in to arrange different styles, aiming to showcase the most beautiful side during the parade.
