International troupes to perform at Kaohsiung Spring Arts Festival; ticket sales now open

Now in its fourth year, the “2013 Kaohsiung Spring Arts Festival” will present 33 programs and nearly 70 performances from February 23 to June 30, featuring a variety of grassland concerts, theater, dance, music, and traditional opera. Participating performing groups come from countries such as Israel, France, New Zealand, Canada, Taiwan, and China. Among them, Israel’s Marshall Dance Theater’s production “The Golden Rooster” has toured in France, Italy, the Netherlands, and other countries. This event will be divided into three phases of ticket sales, with the first phase—including grassland concerts—starting now. Tickets can be purchased through the nationwide National Theater Concert Hall ticketing system, 7-Eleven, and FamilyMart. Special discount packages such as “Parents’ Delight” and “3+1 Get 10% Off” are also available for purchase.

Last year’s Kaohsiung Spring Arts Festival featured Taiwan’s only performance of the British DV8 Physical Theater’s “Can We Talk About This?”, which challenged Islamic taboos, as well as Vietnam’s Esola Dance Troupe’s “Dry Rain”, which offered deep reflections on human warfare. Both international modern dance productions sold out and attracted Cloud Gate Dance Theatre founder Lin Hwai-min to visit Kaohsiung twice to share the experience with a full house of audience members.

 

This year’s 2013 Kaohsiung Spring Arts Festival once again introduces internationally acclaimed modern dance works, inviting Israel’s Marshall Dance Theater to perform “The Golden Rooster” at the Cultural Center’s Zhidetang from February 23. “The Golden Rooster” features 12 dancers and one vocalist, delivering resilient and powerful choreography. Since its premiere at the Israeli Opera House in 2009, it has toured the Montpellier Dance Festival in France, the Hadrian’s Villa Art Festival in Rome, Italy, and the Hague Dance Festival in the Netherlands, earning acclaim in the international dance community. This time, “The Golden Rooster” will bring a completely different theme and movement vocabulary compared to last year’s British DV8 Physical Theater, with performances that showcase unique humor and philosophical depth, generating high anticipation among arts fans. Meanwhile, the Leftist Dance Association, known for nurturing Taiwanese dance talent, will also premiere a newly choreographed piece, “The Rite of Spring: A New Chapter”, as part of the Kaohsiung Spring Arts Festival.

Among the current 33 scheduled performances, the first phase of ticket sales includes grassland concerts such as “NASA Star World Astronomical Exploration Concert”, “Wu Song Fights WHO?! Musical Stage Play”, “Marshall Dance Theater—‘The Golden Rooster’”, “Greek Attis Theatre—‘Prometheus’”, as well as new works by the National Taiwan Opera Company, Taiwan Bangzi Opera Troupe, and Cloud Gate 2.
