Iron Arena Shakes Golden City: Tainan Drum Festival Offers Five Performances with One Ticket

As part of Tainan’s Spring Travel series, the “2013 Tainan International Drum Festival” will be held from February 11 to February 16 (the second to seventh day of the Lunar New Year). Themed “Iron Arena Shakes Golden City,” this year’s event diverges from traditional drum performances. In addition to local groups such as the Ten Drums Art Percussion Group and the Tekko Iron Drum Group, the festival has also invited seven outstanding percussion troupes from five countries: the United States’ Grooversity Latin Drum Ensemble, France’s Panameric Steel Drum Band, South Korea’s Hwaseong Mutual Aid Group, Japan’s No Samurai Taiko Group, and the Turning Wheel Taiko Group.

Among them, France’s Panameric Steel Drum Band is making its first performance in Taiwan and is one of the most important steel drum ensembles in Paris. The steel drums brought by the ensemble are recycled from discarded gasoline barrels. Meanwhile, Japan’s No Samurai Taiko Group, which has participated in Taiwan’s drum events for the sixth consecutive year, has garnered a large fan base in Taiwan. Taiwan’s emerging Tekko Iron Drum Group is a modern percussion ensemble created for the movie “Dream Sugar Factory.” Their instruments include iron drums, steel drums, motors, and car wheel rims, delivering passionate and dynamic rhythms through an unconventional ensemble of percussion instruments.

 

The “2013 Tainan International Drum Festival” was originally scheduled to begin on the second day of the Lunar New Year with evening performances at 18:00, along with two additional shows at 14:30 and 16:30. During the event, attendees only need to purchase one admission ticket to enjoy five consecutive drum performances. On the second and seventh days of the New Year, special opening and closing shows featuring all seven participating groups will be held. During the Lunar New Year holiday in Tainan, in addition to the 2013 Tainan International Drum Festival, there will also be the “Giant Light & Shadow – 3D Magic Sound & Light Show” held every evening at 19:00 and 20:30 at the Yonghua City Hall from the third to the fifth day of the New Year. From February 5 to 24, the “2013 Yuejin Harbor Lantern Festival” in Yanshui will feature an exhibition themed “Hometown in Dreams.” For those seeking an exciting Lunar New Year experience, the Yanshui Beehive Rockets event on February 24 is not to be missed.
