Veterans’ village cuisine is a unique fusion of flavors from various provinces in mainland China, combined with Taiwan’s distinctive local ingredients. To revive the cherished tastes of the past, the Tainan Cultural Heritage Care Volunteers Association will hold the “2013 Tainan Veterans’ Village Food Festival” on the morning of the 27th (Sunday) at 9 AM. The event specially invites veteran’s village mothers to recreate authentic veterans’ village dishes, which will be offered free of charge for everyone to sample.

In the early days, due to tough living conditions, most children in the veterans’ villages could only enjoy homemade dishes from their parents when fathers returned from the front lines, during holidays, birthdays, or special occasions. Additionally, because of the economic hardships back then, many mothers took on part-time jobs, so the children often visited each other’s homes. The mothers frequently exchanged cooking tips, which led to the development of a unique culinary style among veterans’ village households.

These treasured home-cooked recipes are not only memories of the veterans’ elders for their hometowns but also part of the childhood recollections of the second generation of veterans’ village residents. Unfortunately, with the rise of restaurants and many of the mothers now too elderly to run businesses, these flavors have gradually disappeared. The “2013 Tainan Veterans’ Village Food Festival” aims to bring back authentic veterans’ village cuisine by subsidizing the participation of veteran’s village mothers to cook their traditional dishes. The event will offer free tastings at various stalls so attendees can relive the distinctive flavors of the veterans’ villages. There will also be ten New Year goods stalls available for visitors to shop for festive items.
