Taichung New Year Traditional Arts Spring Stroll: A Grand Cultural PK of Japan, Taiwan, and Beyond

Where to go during the Lunar New Year? The Taichung City Cultural Affairs Bureau has planned this year’s Traditional Arts Spring Stroll from February 12th to 15th, which falls on the third to sixth days of the Lunar New Year. The event connects four major districts in Taichung — the city center, as well as the mountainous, coastal, and Tuntien areas — and features 32 performances by international troupes from Japan, Bolivia, Africa, Mexico, and other countries, as well as local groups, engaging in a traditional arts showdown. There will also be 16 art workshops, art markets, and street performances. With activities every day and excitement all around, visitors can even receive festive red envelopes filled with good luck.

This year’s “2013 Taichung Traditional Arts Festival” has changed its format from previous years when it was held during the Lantern Festival. This time, it kicks off earlier, from the third to the sixth day of the Lunar New Year (February 12th to 15th), and takes place simultaneously at the Dadun Cultural Center, Huludun Cultural Center, Port District Art Center, Tuntien Art and Cultural Center, and the Folklore and Cultural Artifacts Museum. The festival is thoughtfully curated with “multiple highlights across different venues, each day focusing on a unique theme.” On February 12th (the third day of the Lunar New Year), the Weijing Dragon and Lion Martial Arts War Drum Group will kick off the festivities at the Port District Art Center with their vibrant four-colored lion dances and celebratory dance drama, setting a joyful tone for the new year. On February 13th (the fourth day), the Minghua Garden Day Troupe, led by Chen Shengzai, renowned as the top comic actor in the Taiwanese opera scene, will perform at the Tuntien Art and Cultural Center, presenting a diverse array of traditional art that complements the festive atmosphere.

 

On February 14th (the fifth day of the Lunar New Year), the Dadun Cultural Center will blend Eastern festivity with Western romance as the One Band Play Band delivers a romantic performance. On February 15th (the sixth and final day), the festival will close with a grand finale featuring the famous rock-inspired traditional Chinese orchestra “Cai Feng Yue Fang” and the “Taichung Sheng Wuzhou Puppet Troupe” at the Huludun Cultural Center. Throughout the event period, the Cultural Affairs Bureau has arranged daily afternoon performances at the Folklore and Cultural Artifacts Museum, allowing visitors to enjoy wonderful shows while exploring the exhibits.
