Foreign tourists find Taipei night markets the most eye-catching

Every year, numerous foreign tourists visit Taiwan, but who loves Taipei the most? And which Taipei attractions are the most favored by international visitors? According to a survey released by the Taipei City Government's Department of Information and Tourism, in 2012, the top three sources of international visitors to Taipei were mainland China, Japan, and Hong Kong & Macau travelers. The most popular Taipei attractions among foreign tourists were night markets, Taipei 101, and the National Palace Museum, taking the top three spots.

The survey results indicated that in 2012, the top five most popular Taipei attractions among visitors were night markets, Taipei 101, the National Palace Museum, the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall, and the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall. However, the attractions that left the highest favorable impressions on foreign tourists varied significantly by region. Mainland Chinese and Japanese tourists had the highest favorability toward the National Palace Museum; Muzha Zoo, Miramar Entertainment Park, and Beitou appeared on the list of favorite attractions for Hong Kong & Macau travelers; while Singaporean and Malaysian tourists showed a notably higher favorability for the Wufenpu clothing market compared to other regions. In addition to Taipei 101, European and American tourists also had higher favorability for Maokong and Maokong Gondola compared to tourists from other regions.

 

In terms of the most memorable aspects, according to the survey results, international tourists' impressions of Taipei generally revolved around three things: visiting night markets, experiencing the city’s strong human touch, and tasting delicious cuisine. Among these, mainland Chinese tourists were most impressed by the strong sense of human warmth in Taipei, Japanese tourists loved the city’s delicious food the most, while Hong Kong & Macau travelers associated Taipei most strongly with its night markets.
