A fantastical journey of soulful dialogue brought by the international queen of illustration

The internationally acclaimed "one of the greatest illustrators of the century," Queen of Illustration Lisbeth Zwerger, makes a whirlwind return to Taiwan after 21 years to hold an exhibition. Within three days of its opening, the exhibition attracted over a thousand visitors. Hu Zhiyi, publisher of 《PPAPER》, said: “The impression I got from speaking face to face with Lisbeth is that she is always so humble, natural, and honest. I really hope you’ll take the time to visit her exhibition, slowly and carefully interact with that exquisite cultural depth, and enrich your soul and inner world.”

 

This time, Lisbeth Zwerger has brought 116 original illustrations created between 1975 and 2010, attracting a large number of fans eager to catch a glimpse. These original artworks, exhibited in Taiwan for the first time, interpret classic fairy tales familiar to all of us with elegant colors and imaginative characters and scenes, taking audiences on a “fantastical journey” through illustration and imagination. The exhibition is divided into three major areas according to timeline: 1975–1989 Stunning the Art World, 1992–2000 Style Established, and 2002–2010 Queen of Illustration Era. From early works influenced by Arthur Rackham in style and color, to gradually developing her own bright palette, delicate brushwork, and use of negative space, one can see Zwerger’s dedication to her illustration themes and her continuous breakthroughs in painting style. Pay attention to the stylistic evolution across different periods.

Born into an artistic family, she was immersed in art and literature from a young age. Her first published work, “The Strange Child,” released in 1977, was hugely popular and earned recognition at the Bologna Illustrators Exhibition. In 1990, she won the “International Hans Christian Andersen Award,” known as the Oscar of children's literature, as the “youngest ever recipient”!

 

The exhibition runs until March 31. During the exhibition period, there are daily guided tours by specialists who share fascinating details of Lisbeth’s works through vivid commentary. At 2:30 PM every Saturday, the “Alice’s Story Time” invites families to explore the fairy tale world illustrated by Alice together. Each session is loved by both kids and adults on site. With the final week of the exhibition approaching, friends who love the fantastical power of illustration should seize the chance to visit.
