Free guided tours to admire fireflies in Xinbei’s Hemei Mountain now open for registration

Every spring, besides the breathtaking blooms across the country, nothing is more exciting than the arrival of firefly season. Hemei Mountain in New Taipei City will host free guided tours from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on April 13 and 14 at the west bank of the Biting Suspension Bridge, led by professional guides. The tours will feature native nectar plants and live butterflies on display along with frog choruses, offering both firefly and butterfly viewing. This year, fireflies have started glowing earlier and will reach their peak soon. The firefly-watching period at Hemei Mountain will continue through late April.

Located on the west bank of Biting Pond in Xindian, Hemei Mountain boasts a rich primitive forest ecosystem where butterflies, fireflies, and tree frogs thrive steadily, making it a wild and enchanting woodland. The walking trails are designed with concepts of natural principles, environmental aesthetics, and ecological engineering. Eco-stone paths separate human and insect traffic, and protective weeding methods ensure excellent ecological conservation, attracting tens of thousands of nature observers each firefly season. The firefly-viewing area spans about 1 kilometer of mountain trail from the Great Buddha Temple parking lot at Biting Pond to Meizhi City Community, featuring 12 firefly breeding zones. The nearby Taipingli and Meichengli communities near the firefly areas have coordinated with their ward chiefs to turn off lights, reducing light pollution and resulting in a noticeable increase in firefly sightings.

 

The firefly-viewing period runs from today until April 21. It is recommended to wear rain boots when walking mountain trails at night. The use of flashlights, camera flashes, or glow sticks is prohibited in firefly breeding zones. When using mobile phones or cameras, please also avoid disturbing others who are enjoying the fireflies. Additionally, there is limited parking near Hemei Mountain, so it is advised to take public transport. From the “Xindian Station” on the MRT, cross the suspension bridge and walk up the asphalt road; you can see fireflies in about 10 minutes. Alternatively, take the Green 6 bus from “Xindian Station” and get off at “Meizhi City” station, then walk up Yongye Road Lane 81 for 5 minutes to reach the site. This event is completely free, but registration via email is required. When registering, provide the name, number of participants, and chosen session time for one attendee.
