The Gold Museum’s Artist Special Exhibition Showcases the Beauty of Mountain Town Stories

The Gold Museum in Jinguashi, Ruifang District, New Taipei City, is presenting the “Copper Joy & Painting – Wang Jialan Solo Exhibition” in the “Golden Water Exhibition Room” from now until May 5. Wang Jialan, an art creator from Jiguashi, uses the metal element "copper" and various media to create copper paintings and carved works on different themes. Through the exhibited pieces, visitors can glimpse the creator’s observations of life and reflections on existence in Jinguashi and the mountain town of Shuinsen Cave.

Among the 19 works in this exhibition, viewers can see depictions of mountain town events such as the Mazu welcoming ceremony, Qitang Old Street, irrigation channel bridges, the site of the Smelting Plant, and the Yin-Yang Sea, among other local festivities and landscape features. The creative themes are inspired by the artist’s everyday observations and life reflections, also conveying her deep affection and strong emotional bond with this mountain town.

 

The title of the “Copper Joy & Painting – Wang Jialan Solo Exhibition” begins with “mountain town,” highlighting the creator’s intention to present life in the mountain town. “Copper Joy Paint” not only indicates that the works primarily combine copper plates and diverse media with painting, using copper as the main material, but also plays on the homophonic sound of “joyful gathering,” suggesting the diversity of the artworks and aiming to express the core spirit of the entire exhibition as well as the creator’s optimistic personality.

The creator, Wang Jialan, is a “mountain-town bride” who moved from the city to marry into a mining family in Jinguashi. After her children grew up and left for school, she began painting, joined goldworking courses at the Gold Museum, and learned drumming with community friends. As she became more integrated into community life, her own life journey also began to change. Since 2006, Wang Jialan has participated in 14 painting or creative group exhibitions and has also taken part in several native language creative picture book competitions. The creator uses the metal element “copper” as the primary material, paired with various simple materials such as ores, driftwood, silvergrass, aluminum mesh, and other metals to produce highly original copper paintings and carved works.
