The yellow rubber duck has been smiling and drifting for 15 years, bringing positive energy to people.

The giant yellow rubber duck (Rubber Duck Project) has recently become the talk of Hong Kong, with an eye-catching exhibition set to take place between Ocean Terminal and Star Ferry Pier at Harbour City from May 2. The origin of the yellow rubber duck lies mainly in bath toys used in children’s bathtubs. Its hollow and rubbery material allows it to float easily on water. In 1992, a container ship carrying over 29,000 yellow rubber ducks encountered a tropical storm in the Aleutian Islands in the North Pacific. A container full of yellow rubber ducks fell overboard and broke open, and the 29,000-plus yellow rubber ducks, along with a group of other rubber toys, began a roughly 15-year journey drifting across the seas.

These 29,000-plus yellow rubber ducks split into northern and southern routes, drifting to various shores around the world with ocean currents, including South America, Australia, Hawaii, Iceland, Canada, the United States, and the United Kingdom. Some even experienced freezing and thawing in the Arctic. These yellow rubber ducks have also provided oceanographers with an excellent opportunity to observe ocean currents, while becoming a classic legend on the high seas.

 

The peace ambassador, the giant yellow rubber duck, will officially meet the public this Thursday. In addition to the 16-meter-tall yellow duck itself, there will also be a series of rubber duck photo exhibitions at “Harbour City Gallery” from May 1 to May 26. Friends planning to visit Hong Kong in the near future should not miss the chance to see this educational and entertaining peace ambassador.
