When visiting Taichung, besides its many night markets and shopping malls, if you’re looking to enjoy a relaxing holiday filled with natural vibes within the city, then the Calligraphy Greenway is your best bet. Spanning multiple greenways in Taichung’s West District, the Calligraphy Greenway is a continuous stretch of green spaces starting from the National Museum of Natural Science, passing through Civic Square, the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts, and ending at Art Lane, covering a total length of about 3.6 kilometers. Various events are frequently held along the route, making it a popular spot for city dwellers seeking greenery on holidays. Due to the gathering crowds, nearby eateries have gone all out to win public favor, especially the uniquely styled cafes and sweet treats that pair perfectly with a leisurely afternoon. Below, we’ll share some recommended food spots around the Calligraphy Greenway, so you can enjoy the urban greenery while savoring unforgettable flavors.

Forty Café
Forty café, which combines the philosophies of fashion, wellness, and simplicity, is located on the first floor of a building next to the Greenway on Gōngyì Road. Its understated exterior and floor-to-ceiling windows create an undisturbed dining atmosphere, while also adding layers of natural light and greenery indoors. Notably, the ingredients here are never kept overnight, so even the salads are deliciously fresh. The coffee is also freshly hand-brewed, making this a truly distinctive café well worth a visit.

Mó Shíjiān Coffee
Created by two men in their 30s, Mó Shíjiān Coffee is a space transformed from a 35-year-old house, blending urban sensibilities with a rustic retro charm. The owners’ top recommendations are the handmade “Vienna” and “Irish” coffees. There’s also the visually enticing honey pancakes, which pair perfectly with apple milk tea as an ideal afternoon tea set. These pastries were something the owners specifically learned to make before opening the shop, showing great dedication.

Ichigo Ichie Kobe Waffles
Located on Gōngyì Road, Ichigo Ichie Kobe Waffles doesn’t have a flashy storefront. Its dignified brick-red sign bears the shop’s philosophy: “Ichigo Ichie,” meaning “one time, one meeting,” symbolizing the value of every encounter in life. The Japanese-educated owner couple was amazed by the taste of Kobe waffles during their time in Japan, sparking their connection to them. In the early days, the couple faced challenges due to the meticulous work ethic of the Japanese, but they were determined to perfect the most authentic Kobe waffles. They custom-built a machine specifically for making Kobe waffles and invited a Japanese master to teach the most traditional methods, all to offer customers the most genuine taste. The waffle flavors include the popular original with butter, red bean with fresh milk, matcha with red bean, caramel, dark chocolate, and raspberry. They also sell “Good Morning Waffles,” which can be spread with jam and butter or layered with fresh fruits like a sandwich—perfect for breakfast. These uniquely flavored Kobe waffles also make great gifts.

Sunrise 'Terra'
This chain cake shop, famous for its Taiwanese pineapple cakes and cheesecakes, may be a chain, but it has only four branches in Taichung: Terra, Traveler, Pineapple, and Monastery. The shop hopes to establish roots in Taichung and create the most delicious and healthy pastries for people across Taiwan to enjoy. The reason Sunrise cheesecake tastes so good lies in its production process—the recipe uses only 85% cream cheese, with minimal eggs and sugar. The simple ingredients ensure customers can enjoy a rich cheesecake flavor. Without other flavors or additives like flour, butter, or pie crust, the result is a pure cheesecake with a dense, velvety texture that gets more flavorful the more you chew. It’s also lower in calories compared to regular cheesecakes because it doesn’t contain butter or other additives. Sunrise also offers Taiwanese pineapple cakes and nougat. The nougat comes in various flavors, including Gold Medal Coffee, Salty Legend, Coffee, and Original Sunrise. Among them, Salty Legend is a savory nougat that uses salt to enhance the flavor, making the sweetness even more unique and the milk flavor richer with every chew.
