As the hot summer arrives, what kind of exercise can help you stay healthy and in shape effortlessly? The 2013 New Taipei City Mountain Hiking Festival not only invites the public to escape the heat in the mountains but also introduces a new concept — “food-source hiking.” Summer in New Taipei is abundant with local produce such as green bamboo shoots, tea, and wild ginger flowers. This year, the festival has carefully selected four hiking trails located in areas where these seasonal ingredients are produced, inviting everyone to enjoy the scenic beauty of northern Taiwan’s mountains and coast while savoring fresh, local flavors. The routes include strolling through the mountain forests of Guanyinshan while enjoying fresh green bamboo shoots, trekking through Pinglin and Shenkeng to admire tea plantations, or hiking the Lingtou Guanri Trail in Shuangxi to gaze at the north coast while sampling local dishes flavored with wild ginger flowers.

The so-called “food-source” trails are about walking amidst lush greenery and nature while connecting with the earth and exploring the origins of various ingredients. This summer’s debut of four food-source trails includes: the “Guanyinshan Forest Canopy Trail” in Wugu District, where you can stroll through the treetops of Guanyinshan, enjoy the gentle mountain breeze, and taste or purchase the freshest local green bamboo shoots; the “Shigongjwei Tail Mountain” in Pinglin District, featuring verdant mountain ranges and tea plantation scenery; the “Lingtou Guanri Trail” in Shuangxi District, which offers views of fishing boats along the north coast and layered mountain ranges shrouded in mist, plus the chance to try dishes infused with the fragrant wild ginger flower; and the “Paotzu Trail” in Shenkeng District, an ancient path between Shenkeng’s Paotzu area and Muzha’s Caotun, lined with tea plantations and green bamboo groves that create a refreshing summer symphony.
New Taipei City Deputy Mayor Hsu Chih-chien said that the best way to travel in summer is to head into the mountains. New Taipei is covered with beautiful, expansive mountain landscapes. A hiking food-source tour is especially rewarding — connecting with nearby attractions, discovering locally abundant seasonal ingredients, and enjoying fresh seasonal dishes all contribute to both physical and culinary wellness. In June, the New Taipei City Tourism Bureau will also offer two free guided tours of hiking trails: one on June 15 at Shigongjwei Tail Mountain in Pinglin District, and another on June 22 at the Guanyinshan Forest Canopy Trail.
