The mysterious blue underwater world has always been a source of fascination. Denmark’s Copenhagen welcomed the The Blue Planet aquarium this spring. With its massive spiral design, the structure uses minimalist aesthetics to recreate the rhythm of ocean waves, making visitors feel as if they are truly being pulled into the underwater realm to embark on a splendid adventure.

 

When viewed from above, The Blue Planet resembles a massive vortex emerging from the ocean floor, perfectly echoing the aquarium's theme. Its unique architectural form blends seamlessly with the surrounding marine environment. As the largest aquarium in Europe, it enjoys a prime location north of the Kastrup Harbor, adjacent to the Øresund Strait, just a few hundred meters from Copenhagen Airport — offering convenient access for travelers from around the globe.

The aquarium was designed by the 3XN architectural firm, drawing inspiration from the imagery of flowing water. Its smooth, curved exterior is formed by assembling small diamond-shaped aluminum panels, resembling a beautiful ribbon or the ever-shifting sand dunes of the desert. The silver-gray aluminum panels mirror the sky’s vibrant clouds and enchanting light, offering a different surprise from every angle. Inside, the aquarium is home to nearly 20,000 species of fish and marine life, spanning tropical to polar regions, and freshwater to saltwater environments. There is also a circular underwater tunnel that allows visitors to get up close to a dazzling array of uniquely shaped fish and large sharks swimming gracefully by — as if entering an underwater amusement park where one could easily lose track of time.
