Recently, Yilan’s Jimmy Liao Theme Square has really been all the rage—it’s even flooding Facebook feeds. But besides seeing Jimmy Liao’s works in downtown Yilan, what else is there to do? How to Get to the Jimmy Liao Theme Square

For readers starting from Taipei, taking a direct KMARO Bus to Yilan Railway Station’s back entrance is indeed a very convenient and comfortable option. But just as you get off the bus and walk to Yilan Railway Station, our editor Jin encounters the first problem: how to get to the front station? Don’t panic or worry—at the entrance of the back station, just ask the station staff for a pass, and you can go directly through the underground passage inside the station to the front station, heading towards the long-awaited Jimmy Liao Theme Square.

After exiting the front of Yilan Railway Station, please turn left and go straight. When you pass the Yilan Tourism Service Center, don’t forget to pick up a “Yilan City Gourmet Map.” The map lists 46 food and souvenir shops, as well as the city’s shopping centers, parks, and historic sites—all drawn on the same map. This is incredibly helpful for a casual trip. The tourism service center also has a dedicated Jimmy Liao merchandise section, giving Jimmy Liao fans even more reasons to shop.

Passing through the service center, the Japanese-style wooden building you see is the old railway dormitory area. The classic old houses attract many visitors for photos. Going further ahead, even though it’s not yet 8 a.m., there’s already a crowd up ahead. Yes, it’s the long-awaited Jimmy Liao Theme Square. Taiwan’s first-ever Jimmy Liao Theme Square brings to life the flying bus from “Secrets in the Sky,” the boy and girl from “Turn Left, Turn Right,” and the suitcase from “The Sound of Colors” from the picture books. It has kids and adults alike going crazy taking photos with the installations, especially those featuring the boy and girl from “Turn Left, Turn Right” and “Secrets in the Sky,” which are the most popular—you might even have to queue to take photos with them.

And the flying bus scene from “Secrets in the Sky” has been deconstructed—with paintings, reliefs, and three-dimensional installations making the bus carry the imagination of travel and joyful moods up into the sky. Each window frames a beautiful landscape. The deconstructed front and back sections of the bus are mounted on two walls, with a three-dimensional flying elk and suitcase in the middle, blending seamlessly with the Jimmy Liao Theme Park and the nearby transit hub into an ever-flowing painting.

Are you feeling like something’s missing? Yep, you’re definitely a super fan of Jimmy Liao. In the picture book “Secrets in the Sky,” the boy and girl waiting for the bus aren’t placed in the same area as the ones from “Turn Left, Turn Right”—you’ll have to cross the street to the other side to get close to the “Secrets in the Sky” couple. Once across the road, sunlight pours onto the dense greenery ahead, turning the short walk to the “Secrets in the Sky” scene into a leafy tunnel that adds a relaxing vibe to your Jimmy Liao adventure.
