What’s the secret behind Dongquan Chili Sauce, which you can only buy in Taichung? Many popular snack shops insist on using this very sauce. For instance, “Qie Zi Mian,” a noodle shop that’s been around for over 50 years, goes through about 10 bottles a day. It’s also used in second market radish cakes and even in famous stuffed pastries.

Dongquan Chili Sauce is common in Taichung, but outside the area, it's hard to come by. However, you can now get it in Taipei Up！Davian Cake Shop at Tamkang University also uses this sauce—their crispy cabbage wraps with the sweet and spicy drizzle are seriously addictive.

Renowned author Liu Kexiang recently wrote an article titled “Where Do Taichung People Eat Breakfast?” In it, he mentioned that some locals claimed their signature breakfast is “fried noodles with the classic Dongquan Chili Sauce.” He couldn’t help but chuckle at the idea of using chili sauce to enhance fried noodles as fine dining, which sparked disagreement among many netizens. “Dongquan Chili Sauce is the king of Taichung flavors,” “Come on, Dongquan is the star—the rest are just sidekicks. Not knowing Dongquan means you’re not from Taichung,” “I live in Japan, but my fridge always has Dongquan!” and “Even though I’m in Hualien now, when I think of Taichung breakfast, it’s the one with Dongquan Chili Sauce,” netizens commented on the Dongquan Chili Sauce fan page, praising the sauce and saying it instantly elevates the taste of noodles, stir-fried dishes, pork rice, pig’s blood soup, or even egg pancakes.
