The most beautiful air ever seen！Kaohsiung Pier-2 “Gas Laboratory” opens today

The Greater Pier-2 Project has expanded the scale of the Pier-2 Art Center. This summer, an installation art exhibition titled “Gas Laboratory,” themed around gases and their applications, is being organized by emerging artists. It runs from now until October 20th at Warehouse C5. Participating artists include Wang Deyu, Wang Xinyi, Bai Shuangquan, Xu Yuzhi, Studio Ship, Xie Jiawen, Rachael Morrison, and others. They showcase air-related creative works using airbags, steam boxes, air collection, bubble wrap, scent actions, balloons, and more—collectively creating a highly poetic atmosphere that offers audiences a unique sensory experience.

Air keeps the earth alive and can also carry scent messages; human civilization has given air meanings far beyond its most basic functions. Water vapor formed by evaporation can cook food or even be converted into power; balloons filled with gas are a child’s favorite and a source of joy; specially made cloth sacks filled with air become safety cushions or comfort providers; bubble wrap, made up of many tiny bubbles, protects fragile and precious items. Invisible and colorless, air may seem nonexistent, yet it is closely tied to our lives.

 

The Kaohsiung City Cultural Affairs Bureau stated that although air is omnipresent and easily overlooked, it is extremely important. As contemporary art and new media creation continue to thrive, a group of artists have chosen air—the substance closest to humans—as their theme. Through forms such as airbags, bubble wrap, balloons, scents, and steam boxes, they invite audiences to watch, feel, touch, and enjoy these creations made of “gas.” The exhibition has invited seven artists who, through careful observation, use various properties of gases to create diverse works, transporting visitors into a world of gas research where they can listen, one by one, to the life stories the artists wish to tell.

 

Visitors to the exhibition can observe everyday life and upload a photo with a “scent” to Facebook. The organizers will select the top 10 best scent photos in the end and give out small prizes. In addition, artist Xie Jiawen will conduct three live balloon creation events during the exhibition period, which will be open to the public. The exhibition is completely free.
