As the tumbleweed tree season draws to a close, locations across Taiwan are riding the final wave of “tree-chasing” fever. Near the Guoxing Railway Station in Nantou, there’s a cluster of “Jiudian Tumbleweed Trees,” upheld by the landowner’s philosophy of“sharing the beauty,” who invested millions to plant over 200 tumbleweed trees and created romantic scenes like swings for the public to enjoy free of charge.When sunlight filters through, casting light on the gradually deepening crimson leaves and complemented by the rustic charm of deadwood, this poetic scenery offers an almost foreign-land feel—no plane ticket required.

The Jiudian Tumbleweed Trees forest is located in Fugui Village, Guoxing Township, Nantou County, behind the well-known tourist spot — the Guoxing Railway Station. It’s a private residence. The name “Jiudian” comes from the fact that there were originally nine tenant families with individual leasing arrangements in the area, hence the name “Jiudian-zi” (nine tenant households). Among them, a tenant farmer surnamed Wu, passionate about tumbleweed trees, invested millions several years ago to plant over 200 trees in his own yard. Thanks to word of mouth among visitors, it has become an alternative tourist attraction in Guoxing Township.

Aside from the tumbleweed trees themselves, which shift colors seasonally between red, green, and yellow—drawing visitors—the owner has also created scenes reminiscent of idol dramas. Elements like swings, forest trails, irrigation ponds, small cabins, and driftwood decorations can all be found within the Jiudian Tumbleweed Trees. A small ecological garden has also been set up in a corner of the park, where you can see ducks, mandarin ducks, and other waterfowl.

Due to this year’s warm winter, the tumbleweed tree craze is expected to last until around February. Those looking to experience the unique charm of these trees should make the most of their February holidays and head to Jiudian Tumbleweed Trees to stroll and take photos, transforming into little forest sprites.
