The town’s open-air living history museum, Beamish Museum, is a captivating destination for anyone who loves history. The museum is designed like a traditional folk village, primarily showcasing the lives of people in northeastern England during the 18th and 19th centuries. The streets and buildings you see—dentist offices, operating rooms, law firms, cooperatives, newspapers, candy shops, factories, carriage garages, as well as automobile and bicycle workshops—all create the illusion of stepping back in time. What’s more special is that the people walking around the town are dressed in period costumes, traveling by tram, horse-drawn carriage, or various retro vehicles like diesel cars.

In addition, Beamish Museum also features a fish and chips shop that prepares its food using traditional coal-fired cooking methods. One type of fish and chips is made the traditional way and served with beef gravy, while another is prepared to suit vegetarian diets. The interior of the shop is decorated with numerous vintage photos and antique tiles, offering a nostalgic journey for both the mind and the eyes.
