In recent years, cultural creativity and art performances have become a popular trend. Starting this Sunday, two major cultural events will take place consecutively in Taichung. Among them, the annual music and arts highlight of the city — the “Taichung Jazz Festival” — will feature 50 jazz groups from 11 countries, while the inaugural “Building. Light. Taichung – 3D Light Sculpture Art Exhibition” will use 3D projection mapping on buildings to present a theater-like illusion, infusing the city’s vibrant artistic energy into everyday life through diverse performance formats.

Taichung Jazz Festival
Having accumulated experience over the past decade, the Taichung Jazz Festival has firmly established itself as one of Asia’s leading international music events. As it steps into its next ten years, beyond familiar participants such as the United States, Japan, and France, this year especially features 50 jazz groups from 11 countries including Norway, Denmark, the Netherlands, Australia, Israel, and Malaysia. The performances are organized around thematic time periods, taking audiences on a journey from the “Classic Era” of the past to experience the evolution of jazz genres, all the way to the present-day “World Stage.”
On the afternoon of October 19, the opening day at 14:00, the event will kick off with a Creative Costume Parade. Featuring three school marching bands — Xingmin, Lingdong, and Ciming — along with Muddy Basin Ramblers, the parade is themed “This Is How Jazz Is Played,” leading the public in a grand celebration reminiscent of the Brazilian Carnival. A fusion of diverse performers will form a highly jazz-styled parade. The hundred-strong parade will start from Civic Square, passing through Zhongming South Road (Jingming Business District), Section 2 of Taiwan Boulevard (Sogo Department Store), and Zhongxing Street. Music fans are also encouraged to don their coolest and most dazzling jazz outfits to join the parade.

During the event, four jazz film screenings and two masterclasses will be organized. The jazz film selection draws inspiration from the “History of Jazz” between the 1920s and 1960s, featuring classic films set to four jazz styles — Swing, Bebop, Cool Jazz, and Fusion — allowing audiences to immerse themselves in cinematic stories while appreciating the evolution of jazz through sound. The jazz masterclasses will feature American pianist Richie Beirach Quartet, a classic jazz representative, and Australian guitarist Albare, a world jazz figure. They will not only perform live but also share their personal journeys in learning and mastering jazz.
Additionally, the event space will be decorated with an exotic ambiance, featuring two main zones: international cuisine and a cultural creativity market. The international food area invites renowned hotels and restaurants to offer authentic gourmet delights such as German pork knuckle, Italian gelato, and French sausages, along with refreshing drinks for a triple sensory treat of sight, sound, and taste. Moreover, 16 specialty cultural and creative stalls will showcase a variety of handcrafted jazz-themed goods including wood carvings, paintings, and decoupage, adding unique memories to your jazz journey.

Building. Light. Taichung – 3D Light Sculpture Art Exhibition
What is 3D light sculpture? In recent years, internationally acclaimed light art displays such as those at Macau’s Ruins of St. Paul’s and Tokyo Station have featured high-end applications of 3D projection mapping on buildings, drawing crowds from around the world each year. Through precise calculations and seamless point-to-point projection, modern technology can create theater-like illusions on massive architectural structures, tricking your eyes and brain into seeing buildings transform before your very eyes — as if the Sleeping Castle from Howl’s Moving Castle has awoken, staging a surreal masquerade of shape-shifting brilliance.
This year, to celebrate the centennial completion of the Taichung Prefectural Hall, the Taichung City Government Cultural Affairs Bureau has specially utilized the historic structures of the Taichung Prefectural Hall and the former Prison Martial Arts Field to create a beautiful encounter between heritage architecture and light sculpture — a 3D light show uniquely for Taichung.
The event will officially begin on three consecutive weekends in November, starting at 18:30 in the evening. On November 1 and 2, the opening night light sculpture show “Welcome Light Concert” will be held at the Taichung Prefectural Hall, featuring a hybrid live and virtual performance by the “MITSO Taiwanese Musicians Symphony Orchestra.” The Prefectural Hall will be transformed into a golden rice field, recreating the blueprints of the building as envisioned by Japanese designers, with scenes of past splendor brought to life through the fusion of sound, light, and music. The evening program will also include interactive light shows and architectural projection painting, allowing participants to not only witness cutting-edge light art but also experience the fun of “graffiti” with light and color on heritage buildings.

On November 8 and 9, the mid-event will take place at the Taichung Martial Arts Field, featuring the interactive light story “Battle of Light.” Students and faculty from the Daohe Six Arts Cultural Center will perform guqin and kendo, integrating the latest virtual interaction technology. The shadow warrior “Photon” will embody the martial spirit of the field, traveling through time to defeat darkness and welcome the light.
On November 15 and 16, the closing event returns to the Taichung Prefectural Hall. “Time Phonograph” will guide viewers through a journey back in time accompanied by nostalgic Taiwanese oldies, while the light sculpture show by the “NTSO Taiwanese Symphony Orchestra” will once again present the century-old local charm of Taichung. The event will conclude with a spectacular heritage light and sound art evening that dazzles the senses.
To promote awareness of local heritage buildings among Taichung residents, the Cultural Affairs Bureau has planned interactive light shows and architectural projection painting sessions for every event. Additionally, a dedicated app can be downloaded from the official website for online painting, allowing participants to create their own heritage light art pieces. To celebrate the centennial completion of the Prefectural Hall, a special “Centennial Prefectural Hall Makeover” creative contest is being held on the official website from October 8 to November 8. By downloading the line art template and submitting creative works, participants have a chance to have their entries displayed on-site during the event. The top 50 selected works will also receive a special “Building. Light. Taichung” gift.
