2013 World's Best Airport to Sleep In – Taoyuan Ranks Sixth in Asia

A survey conducted online by the travel website "Sleepy Airports" among travelers rated airports based on four C’s: comfort (including environment and seating), convenience (such as restrooms, Wi-Fi, and 24-hour dining), cleanliness (of dining areas and toilets), and customer service. The results revealed that Singapore Changi Airport topped the list as the best airport to sleep in, with South Korea’s Incheon International Airport and Hong Kong International Airport taking second and third place respectively, while Taiwan’s Taoyuan International Airport ranked sixth.

When traveling abroad, it’s common to spend the night at the airport waiting for a connecting flight, so how “sleep-friendly” the airport is becomes quite important. Based on an online survey of travelers by the travel website “Sleepy Airports,” airports were evaluated according to four criteria—Comfort (encompassing environment and seating), Convenience (including restrooms, Wi-Fi, and 24-hour dining), Cleanliness (of dining areas and toilets), and Customer Service (from airport staff). The results showed that Singapore Changi Airport took the top spot as the best airport for sleeping, with South Korea’s Incheon International Airport and Hong Kong International Airport ranking second and third, while Taiwan’s Taoyuan International Airport came in sixth.

Singapore Changi Airport has won the title of best airport for 17 consecutive years on this website. The reasons for its selection include six comfortable rest zones, extremely cozy and highly popular reclining chairs and air mattresses, as well as a wide variety of shops and 24-hour airport facilities—whether you want to sleep soundly, grab a bite anytime, or find some entertainment, your needs are sure to be met.

South Korea’s Incheon International Airport took second place in this evaluation. Its most appealing feature is the relaxing rest areas. Moreover, two oversized lounge chairs can be combined to comfortably accommodate three people, which is quite impressive.
Hong Kong International Airport, which ranked third, sees a relatively high number of overnight passengers, so the airport has increased its police presence and conducts brief checks on those staying overnight, ensuring a high level of safety. Additionally, the evaluation noted that the airport’s “beds”—made up of four armless chairs—are quite comfortable, and lounge chairs tucked behind scenic greenery are especially popular. Paid shower facilities and round-the-clock food options also contributed to Hong Kong International Airport’s high score.
Ranked fourth and fifth are Kuala Lumpur International Airport and Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport. The former allows passengers to move around benches to create a comfortable bed, and the dim lighting and quiet atmosphere after midnight help ensure a good night’s sleep. The latter offers spacious open rest areas paired with convenient Wi-Fi and readily available power outlets, satisfying both sleepers and internet users alike, while its affordable and delicious airport food is also worth trying.

Ranked sixth, Taoyuan International Airport impressed survey respondents with its modern facilities, beautiful architecture, and courteous staff. It also offers free shower facilities during layovers, complete with towels and toiletries.
Taoyuan Airport currently has 26 themed waiting lounges, two libraries at Gates C5 and D2, and provides free showers, a cinema and audiovisual center, and a wellness massage area in the transit zone. Free Wi-Fi, mobile phone charging stations, children’s play areas, nursing rooms, prayer rooms, and art exhibitions are spread throughout the terminal halls and boarding corridors. Since the end of 2012, ergonomic reclining chairs designed for passenger rest have also been installed in the departure control area of Terminal 2 and within various waiting lounges.
In this evaluation, the airports ranked seventh to tenth are Tokyo Narita International Airport, Osaka Kansai International Airport, New Delhi Airport in India, and Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in India.
