Fukuyama Masaharu’s latest film has been making headlines, not only creating a stir at its Cannes premiere where it won the Jury Prize, but also racking up over 2.3 billion yen at the Japanese box office. Overseas rights were secured by Steven Spielberg. Recently, the film’s director Hirokazu Kore-eda visited Taiwan, attending the Kaohsiung Film Festival and also catching the Rubber Duck craze by paying a special visit to the Glory Pier.

Director Kore-eda, visiting Kaohsiung for the second time, has a special affinity for Taiwan. This trip not only marked his return to his father’s birthplace, but he also encountered the wildly popular Rubber Duck. He happily mentioned that his six-year-old daughter loves toy dolls, and yellow happens to be her favorite color—making it a perfect souvenir to bring back for her.
Kore-eda attended the post-screening talk on the 20th, where actress Chang Chen-ning made a surprise appearance, exclaiming that she’s a huge fan. During the discussion, she shared how deeply moved she was by the new film. Kore-eda also visited the Spot Huashan Cinema, run by director Hou Hsiao-hsien. Deeply influenced by Hou, Kore-eda was thrilled and even purchased DVDs of works by Hou and Edward Yang, as well as a book by cinematographer Mark Lee Ping-bing, with whom he has collaborated. In addition, Kore-eda finally got to taste the xiaolongbao he’d been curious about in Taipei, and after his packed schedule, he treated himself to a massage, relaxing completely.

“Like Father, Like Son,” set to release in Taiwan on October 25, stars top Japanese actor Fukuyama Masaharu in the lead role, alongside acclaimed actress Eriko Imai, trending actress Haru Kuroki, and popular novelist Lily Franky (whose work “Tokyo Tower: Mom and Me, and Sometimes Dad” has been adapted multiple times). The film continues to be a hit in Japan, with box office earnings reaching 2.3 billion yen and attracting over 2 million viewers.
One highlight of the film is the natural acting of the child actors, including Koki Ninomiya, who plays Fukuyama’s son. He also recently starred as the son in the hit Japanese drama “Hanzawa Naoki.” In the film, he shares touching scenes with both couples, and his interactions with Fukuyama are a standout part of the movie.

“Like Father, Like Son” tells the story of Yoshida Ryohei (played by Fukuyama Masaharu), a successful employee at a Tokyo architecture firm who lives a happy life with his wife (Eriko Imai) and son. Their peaceful existence is turned upside down when a call from the hospital reveals that their beloved son, whom they’ve raised for six years, was accidentally switched at birth and shares no blood relation with them. The Yamashita couple (Lily Franky & Haru Kuroki) face a similar situation. Years of built-up father-son bonds transcend blood ties, leading to a heartfelt story about family and love.
