New Highlight in Sun Moon Lake: "Taomi Pit Stream–Butterfly Trail" Opens

The Taomi Pit Stream nurtures the rich ecological environment of the Taomi community. After the 921 Earthquake, in order to develop the Taomi Eco-village, residents initiated a stream protection initiative and self-funded the greening of over 300 meters of riverside trail between the parking lot and the community. This riverside trail is not only a memory lane of the community’s collective efforts in eco-development, but also an excellent choice for tourists to stroll and enjoy the riverside scenery of Taomi. To improve the original gravel surface and safety, after expanding its jurisdiction to include Taomi, the Sun Moon Lake Scenic Area Administration invested funds for the first time to greatly enhance the safety and ecological features of the trail. A variety of butterfly-attracting plants such as spring everlasting, wild peony, and mountain osmanthus were planted along the way to create a butterfly habitat. Zhang, head of the Sun Moon Lake Scenic Area Administration, said: “We not only preserve the memories and emotions that the community has for this trail, but also hope to eventually expand this riverside trail into a community-based butterfly-watching route, giving the green slow-travel experience in Taomi community a new starting point.”
