Shirakawa-go — Take a Leisurely Morning Stroll
Shirakawa-go is located in Gifu Prefecture, near the border of Toyama and Ishikawa prefectures, with a population of only about 1,900. Its gassho buildings are concentrated in Ogimachi. From the Ogimachi Castle Ruins Observatory on the high point of Mount Shiroyama, you can look down to see rice paddies and a quietly flowing river, with over a hundred triangular thatched-roof houses dotting the landscape. The unassuming yet widely renowned gassho-style homes and the surrounding rich natural scenery create a harmonious pastoral painting.

Located in the southwest of Toyama Prefecture, Gokayama, like Shirakawa-go, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It has two famous gassho buildings: the Nagase House and the Aoyama House. The ancient mountain village retains an old-world charm. The winter snow-covered gassho buildings are particularly beautiful, and many tourists come here just to admire them. In addition to enjoying the architectural beauty of the gassho buildings, you can also have a hands-on farm life experience.
