The 3D Light Show at the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary in Wanjin, Pingtung, Is a Huge Hit During the Christmas Season

The Wanjin Christmas Season is entering its third year. This year, the Pingtung County Government is pioneering a new trend in southern Taiwan by innovatively introducing a 3D light show, which had its first test appearance on the evening of last Saturday (the 7th). The square in front of the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary was packed with eager crowds, rivaling the excitement of Christmas Eve on the 24th. The 3D light show this year will also be presented on December 14 and 15 for six-minute performances, and on December 21, 22, and 23—the days leading up to Christmas—for ten-minute shows. Each of these nights will feature two performances at 7:30 PM and 7:50 PM. On Christmas Eve, December 24, the show will begin at 11:50 PM. Among these, the performances on December 21 and 24 will also be accompanied by live music from the Southern Taiwan Symphony Orchestra.

 

Yin Fenglan, Director of the Pingtung County Government Tourism and Communications Department, pointed out that the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary was originally built without steel, using a mixture of crushed stone, lime, brown sugar, honey, kapok, and fire bricks. After several restorations, the Spanish-style fortress architecture from that time has been preserved, and its grayish-white walls are perfect for projection light shows.

This 3D light show performance is divided into three sections: Catholic culture, the historical evolution of the Wanjin Church, and a joyful celebration of Christmas. It includes the solemn story of the coming of Christ, as well as the multiple renovations of the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary and the successive priests, all conveyed through light projections. The grand finale, accompanied by a live symphony orchestra, showcases the joyful atmosphere of Christmas Eve, bringing the event to its climax.
