Xindian Line / Gongguan Station / Gongguan Night Market

The Gongguan commercial area, close to National Taiwan University and situated at a key station on the Xindian Line of the MRT, attracts crowds from all over. The area includes a variety of shops such as tasty snack stalls and trendy fashion stores, spread across major roads like Xinsheng South Road, Roosevelt Road, and Tingzhou Road, as well as smaller lanes. Among them, the mouthwatering, affordable and delicious snacks are the most beloved and talked about.

Jiaxing Fish Ball Shop is most famous for its Fuzhou fish balls made from pure white fish paste. The exterior is smooth and delicate, but as soon as you bite into it, the savory broth bursts out uncontrollably. The filling, fragrant with minced pork and aromatic seasonings, pairs perfectly with the sweet exterior — perhaps this is what gourmet heaven tastes like. Fish ball noodles are a common sight at Taiwanese night markets, but it’s not so easy to find ones that use only natural ingredients and no MSG. Ancestral Temple Original Flavor Pork Ribs King is always bustling with customers. Its secret to success lies in using parts such as the neck, chest, and small ribs from pigs weighing about 140 jin (approximately 70 kg), cooked together with high-mountain radishes to create a broth that brings out the sweetness of the vegetables and the aroma of the big bones. The pork becomes so tender after long cooking that it falls off the bone with just a light touch of chopsticks, making it very soft and easy to eat. (Image credit: Moleskine Editorial Department)

The owner is named “Liao Tian Ding,” sharing the name of a legendary hero from the early Republican era, which also inspired the shop’s name.
