Another milestone in Taiwan-Japan friendship has been achieved. To express gratitude for the care and assistance provided by various sectors in Taiwan during the 311 Great East Japan Earthquake, and to raise greater awareness of Taiwan among Japanese people, the Japanese civil organization “Taiwan Support Group,” chaired by Emeritus Professor Goto Motoichi of Waseda University and with former Chairman of the Taiwan Association Saito Tsuyoshi serving as an advisor, has designed an exclusive mascot for Taiwan—“Taiwander”—to promote the island’s tourism, cuisine, and culture, and boost Taiwan’s global visibility.

The adorable mascot “Taiwander,” shaped like the island of Taiwan, is adorned with a headpiece featuring bananas, coconut trees, and phalaenopsis orchids—iconic Taiwanese products. It is expected to appear at various Taiwan-Japan exchange events such as trade fairs, sports competitions, and cultural and artistic gatherings. To increase the mascot’s visibility, the Taiwan Support Group specially invited renowned Japanese theme song composer Kenichi Ehara to write both the lyrics and music for a custom theme song titled “Taiwander of the Southern Island.” Moreover, the group also created two companions for Taiwander: the Taiwan blue magpie, a bird species endemic to Taiwan, and the purple crow butterfly.
