【Saturday Cinema】"Saving Mr. Banks," the first movie about Mr. Walt Disney

The beloved novel "Mary Poppins" by P.L. Travers, which was immensely popular with both adults and children back then, was also a favorite of Mr. Disney himself—the man who created the happiest place on earth. His daughters begged their father to turn this story into a film, to make their imaginations come true. To fulfill his promise to his daughters, Mr. Disney went to great lengths to persuade the original author to sell the rights. Little did he know, it would take nearly 20 years to make that promise come true.

The stubborn and conservative Mrs. Travers always believed that Hollywood’s commercial filmmaking would ruin the creativity of the magical nanny in her book. It wasn’t until the novel’s popularity faded and profits dwindled that Mrs. Travers reluctantly agreed to fly from London to Los Angeles to “hear” Mr. Disney’s plans for the work. During her brief two-week visit, Mr. Disney spared no effort, proposing numerous filming options and even bringing in the Sherman Brothers to compose the music. He showed great sincerity, but still couldn’t win over the critical and sensitive Mrs. Travers. Just as Mr. Disney was at his wit’s end, he discovered from her works the shadows of her childhood, which finally opened her heart and led to the completion of the award-winning classic film "Mary Poppins."

"Saving Mr. Banks" is based on a true story and stars Oscar-winning actress Emma Thompson and legendary actor Tom Hanks, who play the two iconic figures—author P.L. Travers and the world-renowned Mr. Walt Disney. The story depicts the hard process by which Mr. Disney managed to bring the classic and widely loved work "Mary Poppins" to the big screen.
