During long-haul flights, it’s inevitable that you’ll need to eat on the plane. The meals offered by different airlines can vary in taste, but besides the standard options provided by flight attendants, there are actually many special meals that can be requested in advance, including religious meals, medical meals, children’s meals, and more—there are over 20 types of meals that passengers can pre-order from the airline.

1. Religious Meals
Religious meals include Muslim meals, Indian meals, Jewish meals, vegetarian Indian meals, and strict Indian vegetarian meals. Since different religions have varying dietary restrictions, in-flight catering services design different religious meals to accommodate as many needs as possible.
2. Medical Meals
Medical meals include diabetic meals, low-cholesterol/low-fat meals, low-calorie meals, gluten-free meals, low-lactose meals, and low-sodium meals. Passengers may have different dietary restrictions due to illness or health concerns. As long as you clearly communicate your meal requirements when booking, most airlines will try their best to accommodate them.

3. Children’s Meals
Children’s meals are divided into those for ages two to five, and baby meals for infants who cannot eat solid food. Airlines generally also provide formula milk for passengers to prepare for babies. Some airlines even design special meal boxes featuring cartoon characters that kids love, which you can even take home as a keepsake after the flight.
4. Vegetarian Meals
Since the definition of vegetarianism differs between the East and the West, vegetarian meals also vary. The West often emphasizes health, focusing on organic and natural ingredients, while the East is mostly driven by religious reasons. Options include Western lacto-ovo vegetarian meals, Chinese-style vegetarian meals, raw fruit and vegetable meals, strict Western vegetarian meals, and fruit meals.

5. Special Meals
There are also other special meals such as seafood meals, beef-free meals (which exclude all forms of beef), and other types of special meals. For example, if someone has an allergy to a certain food, that item will be specifically excluded from their meal.
