Organized by the Chiayi City Cultural Affairs Bureau, the “Theme Exhibition on Taiwan’s Baseball Spirit” is now on display until May 18 at the Chiayi Branch of the former Tobacco and Liquor Monopoly Bureau. The exhibition traces the legacy of the Chiayi Agriculture and Forestry Baseball Team, covering eras such as the Triple Crown years, grassroots baseball development, the Care Cup baseball tournament, the spirit of the Chuanfu Cup, and the Zhuolu Mountain Cup; it also features items from last year’s Classic, including the blood-stained pants worn by Yang Yao-hsun after an injury while battling South Korea, the retired jersey of Iron-blooded Coach TSENG Chi-en, and various record-breaking medals won by professional baseball stars. Nearly 300 artifacts are on display.

The hit film *KANO*, the first movie funded and subsidized by the Chiayi City Government, caused a sensation. To revisit the story of the Chiayi Agriculture and Forestry Baseball Team, the Chiayi City Government has launched the “Taiwan’s Home Plate — The Spirit of KANO: A Theme Exhibition on Taiwan’s Baseball Spirit.” The venue is located in the former Chiayi Branch of the Tobacco and Liquor Monopoly Bureau, allowing baseball fans and those interested in Taiwan’s local history and culture to relive the glorious moment in 1931 when the KANO team (Chiayi Agriculture and Forestry Baseball Team) won second place at Japan’s Koshien Tournament, evoking memories of Chiayi as the birthplace of Taiwanese baseball.
The exhibition’s main theme is inspired by the legacy of the KANO team, promoting values such as “baseball ethics,” “multicultural integration,” “ethnic care,” “tenacity and the will to never give up,” and “Taiwan as world-class.” The venue is designed to recreate the atmosphere of Chiayi in the 1930s, featuring a replica of a baseball stadium corridor from that era to evoke the tension of players stepping onto the field. The players’ locker room is also reconstructed based on early Taiwanese baseball stadiums. Former KANO players Hong Tai-shan and Tsai Ching-hui signed autographs and took photos with fans in front of a portrait display, both in their 70s and 80s, hoping to reignite public memories of KANO’s glory through this exhibition.

The exhibition also includes items belonging to the late Xu Sheng-ming, former head coach of the now-defunct EDA Rhinos, who was awarded the “2013 Elite Award for Lifetime Achievement.”
The Chiayi City Cultural Affairs Bureau noted that the most treasured item in the exhibition is the 1931 Koshien Second Place Shield, a prized exhibit from the Chiayi University Museum of History, making its first-ever public appearance outside the university. Other highlights include the 1969 Golden Dragons Little League team-signed ball, various historical baseball artifacts from the Chiayi Agriculture and Forestry Baseball Team, the blood-stained pants worn by Yang Yao-hsun during the 2013 Classic, and a dedicated section introducing Coach Xu Sheng-ming. Over 300 precious Taiwanese baseball artifacts are displayed, offering visitors a journey through time to see the unyielding spirit of baseball pioneers and rediscover the soul and essence of Taiwanese baseball.
